“How the Nurse Feels” is a new musical based on an award-winning short story by Greg Changnon. It’s the coming-of-age story of Tess Powell, a high school senior, who is cast as “the Nurse” in her high school production of Romeo and Juliet. When the drama teacher makes a sudden exit, the production falls under the direction of the football coach, who is out of his depth. Juliet, the role Tess covets, is played by the prettiest and most popular girl on campus and Tess’s nemesis, Trudy Painter, and Romeo is played by the her best friend Brayden, who happens to be gay. When a handsome new boy comes to town and joins the cast, and the sudden death of a cast member occurs, Tess learns hard lessons about love and loss, which propel her to the heartfelt discovery of “How The Nurse Feels.”
This original work was shepherded through the ASCAP/Disney Musical Theatre Workshop in 2009 under the mentorship of Broadway composer Stephen Schwartz (Godspell, Pippen and Wicked), and was presented in multiple staged readings at New World Stages in New York City.
